SafeSport online training for players and parents

May 22, 2023

Dear members and parents,

We understand that as parents, you want to ensure the safety and well-being of your children, especially when they are involved in youth sports. One of the best ways to prevent abuse and misconduct abuse is to recognize the signs of grooming and bullying behavior. With that in mind, below are some free resources from the U.S. Center for SafeSport that may help you, as a parent, as well as your child.

We encourage each of you to complete these trainings on an annual basis and share them throughout your club.

To complete the training, please log in or sign up for a SafeSportTrained.org account using this link: https://safesporttrained.org/?KeyName=JJFAQsQPWNRj01edWcPr

You will then be able to enroll in the applicable course via the Catalog section of your account.

SafeSport for Kids / Youth Athletes:

Two free online courses are offered for children of varied ages and their parents or caregivers. A parent or legal guardian should create an account to provide consent for their child to access the training. Once that account is created, parents can choose from either:

  • SafeSport for Kids (ages 5-12, 15 minutes). This course educates young athletes about the difference between discipline and abuse and encourages them to reach out to a trusted adult when something is not right. It also stresses the importance of being a good teammate, positive sportsmanship, and having a healthy sport environment focused on fun and safety.
  • SafeSport for Youth Athletes (ages 13-17, 15 minutes). This course (15 minutes) is intended for youth athletes ages 13+ and educates them about bullying and hazing prevention, tips for positive online interactions, and reporting of sexual abuse and misconduct.

Parent's Guide to Misconduct in Sport:

This course (30 minutes) educates parents of minor athletes about types of abuse and misconduct in sport, with guidance on fostering positive and safe sport experiences for children.

You may also access the U.S. Center for SafeSport’s Parent Toolkit.

These courses complement the separate SafeSport Trained Core or Refresher courses required as part of US Club Soccer staff and player registration (for those players who are 18 years old or older by the last day of the applicable registration year). That is, the SafeSport for Youth Athletes and Parent’s Guide to Misconduct in Sport courses do not satisfy US Club Soccer’s registration requirement for staff and applicable players.

We also encourage you to frequent usclubsoccer.org/safety, which aggregates a variety of information and resources related to Safeguarding and Compliance, such as applicable policies, how to report a concern, reporting obligations pursuant to the SafeSport Act, and more.

Thanks for your time and shared commitment to safeguarding.
